On Wednesday the US Treasury Department approved the release of several ferry licenses for passenger transport between the United States and Cuba.

The direct shipping line re-opens after more than fifty years. The US Treasury did not specify the number of licenses issued; the first company to confirm a license was Baja Ferries, which operates several lines to Mexico. The company is now waiting for a permit from Cuba. Supposedly, the first ferries to go from Miami to Havana might go as soon as September of this year, making three or four connections a week.
